5 Facebook Ad Mistakes That Are Costing You Money

We have audited hundreds of Facebook ad accounts. These five mistakes appear in almost every underperforming account — and every single one of them is fixable.

Mistake 1: Targeting Too Broadly (or Too Narrowly)

Broad targeting lets Facebook's algorithm do the work — and it is surprisingly good at finding buyers. But targeting 50 million people with a $50/day budget means Facebook has no data to optimise. Conversely, hyper-narrow targeting (audiences under 100K) starves the algorithm of the volume it needs. The sweet spot is typically 500K-2M for cold audiences.

Mistake 2: Not Separating Prospecting from Retargeting

Running the same ads to cold audiences and warm website visitors is leaving money on the table. Cold audiences need awareness-stage messaging. Retargeting audiences already know you — they need a specific offer or social proof to convert. Separate your campaigns.

Mistake 3: Killing Ads Too Early

Facebook needs 50 conversions per ad set per week to exit the learning phase. If you are killing ads after 3 days and $30 of spend, you are making decisions with no statistical significance. Give ads time to breathe.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Your Landing Page

A great ad can only get the click. If your landing page is slow, unclear, or does not match the ad's promise, you are paying for traffic that bounces. Check your page speed. Ensure message match between ad and landing page.

Mistake 5: No Creative Testing Process

The biggest lever in Facebook advertising is creative. Most accounts run the same two or three ads indefinitely. Build a systematic testing process — new hooks, new formats, new offers — and you will consistently find winners.
